How Lamb is Raised

Because they’re adaptable to a wide range of climates and management systems, lamb is raised in every state in the country, and fresh local lamb is available year round. The top five producing states are TX, CA, CO, WY and SD.

No artificial growth hormones are used in lamb production in the U.S.*

*Although growth hormones are not used in lamb production in the US, they are legal to use.

American Lamb producers care about the health and welfare of the lambs we raise.  We provide a healthy, comfortable existence for our animals.  Our shepherds make sure our animals have natural grazing compatible with the environment, a clean water source and protection from predators. Lambs are vulnerable to many predators including coyotes, wolves, mountain lions and bears.  Shepherds protect their flocks with the help of guard dogs, donkeys and llamas.

Because of the diversity in geography, climate and management systems used in lamb husbandry, the lambing season varies considerably. The goal is to raise succulent, tender, fresh meat year-round.

While lamb producers raise a variety of sheep breeds depending on their location, the focus today is on producing quality meat. Lamb producers use meat breeds (rather than wool breeds) that are regarded for their larger size and high quality cuts.

American lambs are reared on high quality natural forage diets. Sheep are herbivores. Their ideal pasture is an array of luscious greens, nutritious legumes and forbs (a broad-leafed flowering plant). Some lambs are marketed directly from the pasture, while others are grain-fed for a short time. Whatever your lamb preferences are (natural, organic, grassfed, or grain-finished), you will find what you’re looking for at a store or butcher near you

Sheep’s natural grazing skills make them ideal for controlling weeds naturally and for preventing fires by clearing undergrowth in forests and wooded areas. Many wineries are using sheep to graze weeds in the vineyards.  Sheep improve pasture and rangeland quality by recycling nutrients back into the soil, minimizing erosion and encouraging native plant growth.

American Lamb producers take pride in tending to all aspects of their lambs’ lifecycle, from birth to finishing to fabrication to ensure that you, the consumer, get the safest, freshest, most flavorful natural lamb meat possible. All American Lamb is either USDA inspected for wholesomeness and quality or inspected by state systems equal to the federal government standards.
